LIBBA NEWSLETTER– July 2014

President Message- Summer 2014
It has been a while since I have been in the correct frame of mind to do any writing for anyone. The events that were bestowed upon myself and my family in March of 2014 were truly heart breaking. Losing my wife, Nancy, to a heart attack and then…….a few days later losing my future son-in-law, Anthony, was nothing short of tragic.
At a time like this, I surrounded myself with many good friends. At this point, I have begun to make the adjustments that needed to be made. My family, especially my cousin Billy proved what a family is all about.
My girls are doing fine and are also making their adjustments. If you missed the tribute that they did for their Mom, you would have seen how much love was in that room. Leading us in prayer at the wake service was my boyhood friend, Bob Bertram. One thousand people came to pay their respects to Nancy. There is also a bench at the entrance to Shagwong with a plaque that reads, “Nancy R. Lomnicki – Forever Young”.
I will be at the Jamboree and you can read all about the plans in this newsletter. I look forward to seeing everyone. Before I close, I want to thank Cookie and my board of directors for being there for my family and I. To all my family and friends, especially Warren, Ira, Adam and Jimmy…..I love you guys!

Live for today….for tomorrow is promised to no one!

We remain,

1st Vice President Message

I would like to thank everyone that helped with the beach cleanups this spring. I would especially like to thank fellow LIBBA member Chuck Hollins for the getting the worn out air compressors for Smith Point replaced and all of the other LIBBA volunteers that help servicing the air compressors across the Island.

I hope to see everyone at the Jamboree giving their support. If you don’t know who I am, just ask for “Uncle Frank”. I myself have been in LIBBA since 1974 and have been very involved in “Keepers Of The Beach” such as: placing Christmas Trees on the beach for dune replenishment, grass planting, beach cleanups, helping free stuck vehicles on the beach and educating people the importance of airing down their tires to prevent getting stuck.

We need to see new faces getting involved with LIBBA especially the youths who are the future of our organization. Bring the kids to the LIBBA events such as the beach cleanups. It will teach them that we are all stewards of the beach and their involvement will carry on the LIBBA traditions.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing you at the Jamboree on August 9th.

LIBBA Scholarship Update
SCHOLARSHIP RAFFLE!
This year the scholarship committee will raffle off an iPad mini at the jamboree, the ticket price is $10.00. You need not be present to win, and tickets are available now, ask any director or call me at 631-355-3766. I know that the price tag may be a little steep but we really never sell all that many so your odds of winning are pretty good! Last year we awarded a worthy applicant by the name of Jacqueline Faller and continued to support the Bob Sweeney Sport Fishing Education Center at Cedar Beach. This year we plan to increase those awards so any help is always appreciated. The officers and directors of LIBBA are as usual humbled by our members and friends who never waiver in their support of our endevours. Award Winning Fish Recipe by LIBBA member
Joseph Gittleman

Recipe: Heart Healthy Microwave Fish
Easy-to-use recipe that I have used for making a quick fish dinner, low in animal fats. Only animal-origin fat comes from the fish itself, if you do not use the added cheese option. Here is my heart-smart, energy conserving, award winning, recipe for microwave fish ( with variations
and improvements). Adaptable for conventional oven, and good for anyone on a gluten-free diet.

- Servings: 4
- Prep Time: 15
- Cook Time: 20

Ingredients:
* 24 oz., boneless, raw white Fish TYPE?
* 1.5 cup chopped Onions
* 1 chopped Green Peppers
* 1 Red Pepper
* 3 cloves Garlic
* 2 (2-1/8" dia) Lemons
* 10 sprigs Parsley
* 1 Sprig Oregano
* 5 sprig Cilantro
* 5 leaves Basil
* 0.5 tsp Thyme
* 3 servings Extra Virgin Olive Oil
* 4 servings Coarse Kosher Salt - Kroger
* 0.25 tbsp Black Pepper
* 2 cups White Rice (Long-Grain, Cooked)
* 3 Italian Plum Red Tomatoes
* 1 large (2-1/4 per lb, approx 3-3/4" long, 3" dia) Green Pepper
* 1 large (2-1/4 per lb., approx 3-3/4" long, 3" dia) Sweet Red Peppers
* 2 Red Hot Chili Peppers

Instructions:
Dice the tomatoes, onions, garlic, herbs, and peppers, and combine in a mixing bowl. Squeeze in juice from one lemon and drizzle on some olive oil, salt and pepper to taste. Toss together and set aside. Drizzle in olive oil to lightly coat bottom of baking dish. Place the fish fillets skin side down, and arrange neatly. Lightly salt and pepper fish to taste. Give the fillets a quick drizzle of olive oil. Spoon the diced mixture and generously to cover the fish and then tightly cover to seal, the baking dish with plastic wrap (for microwave) or foil (for baking).
Microwave: Set microwave on high for 8 -10 minutes for 1000 watt oven, add 3 minutes for 750 watt oven. Place baking dish in and start oven. Begin cooking the starch of choice so that it will be done in about 20 minutes. Observe the cooking process. The plastic wrap will expand and balloon up. Do not touch or puncture; this is perfectly normal. When cooking cycle is done, let dish rest for 10 minutes before serving. During this time the plastic wrap balloon will retract. Do not open when still inflated as a severe steam burn may occur.
Oven option: Place foil wrapped baking dish into pre-heated 300 degree oven for about 15- 20 minutes, fish is done when it flakes easily. Let stand for 5 minutes. Open carefully as there will be hot liquid and steam under the foil. Serve the fish with or over rice or new potatoes there will be plenty of sauce to go around and have a good loaf of Italian bread to sop things up ( sorry about that if you are gluten free). Fresh steamed broccoli, bok choy or baby string beans are great with this as well. Beverage of choice is yours, a good white wine or beer are just fine...I
imagine fresh lemonade or iced tea will work too. Left over the next day are very good served cold.
Cheaters may use store bought fresh salsa instead of starting from
scratch, hey it works in an emergency or camping trip, but not as good
as scratch.

A LIBBA Members Story –
This is a true story that happened to me and my son Jonathan in May of 1998. I wrote this as an article for the Fisherman Magazine and it appeared in the Tales End section in the August 31, 1999 edition. I’m sharing it here because the story is worth repeating and I want others to learn from my mistake of what can happen if you don’t communicate with your kids. Also, please realize that this was a couple of years before I had a cell phone and my son had little choice when he thought I was in trouble.

JOY RIDE
Jonathan, my 11 year old son and I had been thinking of this day with great anticipation as I do every year. This was to be our first fishing trip in the New Year. This day (usually night) is the icebreaker of the new season and has always been a time of great anticipation for me and also for Jon. The date was May 1, 1998 and although the date is always different each season, the day/night I make my first cast is a time of celebration that I’ve made it through another winter.
I arrived home from work disappointed that it was raining and the weather forecast was for more rain, but we were going!
After dropping air in the tires we headed down the beach. As we were driving along the beach I was talking to Jon about how driving on sand was so different from driving on pavement. By the time we had reached the end of our trip he was surely tired of hearing me talk. I parked the truck in the back of the inlet and instructed Jon to get suited up. Ten minutes later we were both ready to make our first cast of the young season.
Tonight we were throwing 2-ounce bucktails dressed with pork rind but I could sense that he was nervous about fishing atop the jetty in the dark. After an hour of casting Jon told me he was cold. I instructed him to get undressed and get back in the truck and get warmed up. I told him I was going to stick it out a while longer and then we would leave for home. As he went to the rear of the truck to take off his gear I proceeded to climb down from the top of the jetty to the waters edge.
With the rain falling and the hood of my sweatshirt and foul weather top pulled snuggly over my head, I had to turn my whole body if I wished to look anywhere to the side or behind me. Understand that in this particular area of the jetty the height from the top is approximately 14 feet to the waters edge. About the only thing I could hear was the constant noise of rain hitting my rain top. After 15 minutes of casting I heard the sound of a truck engine and saw headlights as they strafed the inlet moving away. I thought nothing of it because this is a common occurrence.
I continued casting for 10 or 15 minutes, eventually deciding to move over to the left. I climbed to the top of the jetty and started to move when I immediately something was missing. MY TRUCK!!! I swept the beach with my neck-light looking for some sign of my vehicle thinking that my eyes were playing tricks on me. It, along with Jonathan, were no where to be see! I stood there in frozen silence with my mind going a million miles an hour. What happened to Jonathan? Did someone kidnap him? Was this a crazy prank by someone?
I began to think back on what probably happened after I saw Jon go to the rear of the truck. He had gotten himself undressed and got back into the truck. As he’s sitting there in the passenger seat he’s looking through the window for me. Because he was getting undressed at the time he never saw me climb down from the top and I never told him what I was going to do. The poor kid must have been stricken with panic thinking something had happened to me. He knew he was miles from help and/or a telephone, so I concluded he started up the truck and decided the best thing for him to do was to go for help.
I stood there for what seemed an eternity. There wasn’t even in a boat in the inlet to flag down for help. Reflecting back to that night now, I can honestly say I was in a panic and started to run as fast as I could to the front of the jetty, hoping another trunk or Jonathan would be there. As I got to the front of the jetty I could see no one was there. I stared down the beach hoping to catch the silhouette of another vehicle but saw nothing and decided the best thing to do was to begin walking/running in the direction he would have headed. As I’m walking, I suddenly saw headlights reflecting off the cloudy sky and tops of the dunes and realized there were two trucks heading my way but they were on the back trail which was about a quarter of a mile from where I was on the front beach. I made a mad dash towards the back trail taking off my neck-light and holding it over my head continually flashing it in the direction of the vehicles. I was about 300 yards from the trail when the trucks moved past, never seeing me. I was now a half mile from the inlet and decided my best move would be to head back towards the inlet and get help from the drivers who just drove past. I arrived at the inlet about 10 minutes later and was relieved to see one of the vehicles moving slowly from the back towards the front along the rocks. I flashed my light at the vehicle and as I did I caught a glimpse of a familiar face. IT WAS JONATHAN! He was sitting in the passenger seat of a stranger’s truck being driven by a person named Arnie. I immediately walked up to the truck and opened the passenger door and picked Jonathan up and hugged him and told him how sorry I was for scaring him (the poor kid probably thought I would kill him). Arnie told me that Jonathan had come across them as they were heading out to look for nesting turtles that apparently breed at this time of the year. He said two other guys had hopped in my truck and were parked in the back where I had originally parked and they were walking along the top of the jetty scanning the water with lights looking for signs of me. Arnie, Jonathan and I moved back to where my truck was parked and me up with my two other rescuers. I shook their hands when I met up with them and can’t begin to describe the total sense of relief that had over taken me at this time. We all agreed that Jonathan had done a very brave thing in making the decision to go for help.
After we had gotten back on the trail towards home Jon and I discussed the events which we both just lived through. He said, “a few minutes after getting undressed I realized I couldn’t see you. I thought something had happened to you. I yelled for you for ten minutes but you didn’t answer”. I explained that it was my fault for not telling him where I went. Once we reached the pavement and the whole weight of what we went through hit me, I felt inclined to stop off and let Jonathan pick out an ice cream cone for a job well done.

World Wide Web (www) PASSWORD Guidance Recommendations
Email Address and/or Unique IDs and Passwords are the key to accessing your online presence and accounts. Establishing a Non-Promiscuous password is ESSENTIAL.. To create a nontrivial password, you should use a series of upper/lower characters and numbers. If you want to make it even stronger, insert a special character to make your password even more bulletproof. Using just a combination of upper and lower characters is NOT enough these days. As a SUGGESTION, you can insert a number in between a 2 or more syllable word. As a fictitious example, I have an Indianapolis 500 model corvette. A fine example using this affinity could be cor500vette or indian500apolis or indianapolis500corvette or corvette500indianapolis. Now if I add 1 or 2 capital characters to any of these characters, it makes it less trivial. If I also include for example, a special character $ character in place of the s, or a capital let O in place of the zeros in 500, it makes it even less trivial. Protecting yourself on-line is imperative so adapting to this sort of password behavior will make the password easy for you to remember and almost impossible to hack. Need more tips, ask others and/or the webmaster who should be happy to provide an opinion. Have another tip, start a blog or a “discussion forum topic” on the new web site to bring the subject to light.

We remain,

The Keepers of the Beach

Frank Schortemeyer - !st VP LIBBA #382

2nd Vice President Message

As I wrote in the January Newsletter we now have a new updated web page (www.LIBBA.com) which includes a new membership program. We are requesting E-mail addresses from all that use e-mail. If you do not have one, our web master, Al Scardino, can assign one to you. This will be very helpful in sending out dues notices and general membership notifications on upcoming events. The saved money on postage will be used to further our course to insure beach access and conservation for all.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing you at the Jamboree on August 9th.

Award Winning Fish Recipe by LIBBA member

Joseph Gittleman

Recipe: Heart Healthy Microwave Fish

Easy-to-use recipe that I have used for making a quick fish dinner, low in animal fats.  Only animal-origin fat comes from the fish itself, if you do not use the added cheese option.  Here is my heart-smart, energy conserving, award winning, recipe for microwave fish ( with variations

and improvements). Adaptable for conventional oven, and good for anyone on a gluten-free diet.

-         Servings: 4

-         Prep Time: 15

-         Cook Time: 20

Ingredients:

* 24 oz., boneless, raw white Fish TYPE?

 * 1.5 cup chopped Onions

* 1 chopped Green Peppers

* 1 Red Pepper

* 3 cloves Garlic

* 2 (2-1/8" dia) Lemons

* 10 sprigs Parsley

* 1 Sprig Oregano

* 5 sprig Cilantro

* 5 leaves Basil

* 0.5 tsp Thyme

* 3 servings Extra Virgin Olive Oil

* 4 servings Coarse Kosher Salt - Kroger

* 0.25 tbsp Black Pepper

* 2 cups White Rice (Long-Grain, Cooked)

If you can make it to the Jamboree please stop by the Scholarship table and say hello.

Award Winning Fish Recipe by LIBBA member

Joseph Gittleman

Recipe: Heart Healthy Microwave Fish

Easy-to-use recipe that I have used for making a quick fish dinner, low in animal fats.  Only animal-origin fat comes from the fish itself, if you do not use the added cheese option.  Here is my heart-smart, energy conserving, award winning, recipe for microwave fish ( with variations

and improvements). Adaptable for conventional oven, and good for anyone on a gluten-free diet.

-         Servings: 4

-         Prep Time: 15

-         Cook Time: 20

Ingredients:

* 24 oz., boneless, raw white Fish TYPE?

 * 1.5 cup chopped Onions

* 1 chopped Green Peppers

* 1 Red Pepper

* 3 cloves Garlic

* 2 (2-1/8" dia) Lemons

* 10 sprigs Parsley

* 1 Sprig Oregano

* 5 sprig Cilantro

* 5 leaves Basil

* 0.5 tsp Thyme

* 3 servings Extra Virgin Olive Oil

* 4 servings Coarse Kosher Salt - Kroger

* 0.25 tbsp Black Pepper

* 2 cups White Rice (Long-Grain, Cooked)

The saved money on postage will be used to further our course to insure beach access and conservation for all.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing you at the Jamboree on August 9th.

SCHOLARSHIP RAFFLE!
      This year the scholarship committee will raffle off an iPad mini at the jamboree, the ticket price is $10.00. You need not be present to win, and tickets are available now, ask any director or call me at 631-355-3766. This year we plan to increase those awards so any help is always appreciated. The officers and directors of LIBBA are as usual humbled by our members and friends who never waiver in their support of our endevours. If you can make it to the Jamboree please stop by the Scholarship table and say hello.

Award Winning Fish Recipe by LIBBA member

Joseph Gittleman

Recipe: Heart Healthy Microwave Fish

Easy-to-use recipe that I have used for making a quick fish dinner, low in animal fats.  Only animal-origin fat comes from the fish itself, if you do not use the added cheese option.  Here is my heart-smart, energy conserving, award winning, recipe for microwave fish ( with variations

and improvements). Adaptable for conventional oven, and good for anyone on a gluten-free diet.

-         Servings: 4

-         Prep Time: 15

-         Cook Time: 20

Ingredients:

* 24 oz., boneless, raw white Fish TYPE?

 * 1.5 cup chopped Onions

* 1 chopped Green Peppers

* 1 Red Pepper

* 3 cloves Garlic

* 2 (2-1/8" dia) Lemons

* 10 sprigs Parsley

* 1 Sprig Oregano

* 5 sprig Cilantro

* 5 leaves Basil

* 0.5 tsp Thyme

* 3 servings Extra Virgin Olive Oil

* 4 servings Coarse Kosher Salt - Kroger

* 0.25 tbsp Black Pepper

* 2 cups White Rice (Long-Grain, Cooked)
