Mary Borgese #1050 – OHS Chairman 2013 FISHING CONTEST HIGHLIGHTS2013 will probably go down as a difficult year. Many of us expressed concerns about the fishery as we struggled to find consistent fishing patterns. Montauk had some bursts of activity, including a great summer run of blues. Weakfish made a strong appearance around the island, but not a lot of big fish were found to enter into the contest. Where did all the stripers go? At least until early November when it seemed that the whole South Shore light up with striped bass. It was a great 2 week window that shut down as quickly as it started. Our boating brethren did have a great year on the water, so there were fish around. Entries were received for 12 striped bass, with the top three at 30-31 pounds. In the youth division Matt Malenovsky cleaned up with 3 quality fish. Spending time on the water with his Dad helped him catch some nice fish. The children’s bass division was headed up by Riley George with a nice 12# bass. In the blue fish division 10 fish were entered. An impressive run of big blues throughout the summer at Montauk gave people a chance to grapple with some quality fish. Yet the top blue at 16# was caught during the South Shore Derby in October. The next 5 blues were all about 15#. It was fun hooking into some of those brutes. Unfortunately only one weakfish was entered this year. We all hope that this fishery will continue to rebound so more of us can enjoy catching this beautiful fish. The 2013 contest winners will be announced at the annual meeting in March. Don’t forget to enter your fish in the 2014 contest. Next year you could be the one getting a great prize!. Rick Zappala #1134 - Fishing Contest Chairman A LIBBA Story – Montauk Air CompressorsChuck Hollins is the son of the late Charles L. Hollins who had joined LIBBA about a year after the organization was founded in 1958. So Chuck has been a member of LIBBA since almost the beginning. He’s seen quite a bit and has probably heard it all over the years. One of the questions he’s been asked over time is, “why should I join LIBBA”? Well the story below should help answer that question and also remind members that staying a member is important. It was the weekend before the Labor Day weekend 2013 and LIBBA First VP, Frank ( DON’T MISSPELL MY NAME) Schortemeyer was fishing the Suffolk County Park at Shagwong Point in pursuit of the wile and elusive Striped Bass. On this particular day, one of the many fisherman on the beach spotted Frank's LIBBA plate on his truck and drove over to where he was fishing and advised him that the air stations that are located just off the beach were not working. Frank also happens to be the LIBBA representative for Suffolk County Parks so he felt an obligation to check things out immediately. He packed up and drove up to the park entrance. He looked at the two compressors that provide air to 6 air stations and found that neither unit would come on. He then made a call to fellow LIBBA member Chuck Hollins. Chuck had gotten a call from someone at the park so he was already aware. Chuck also knew what weekend was coming up and the amount of trucks and campers that would be using the beach. He decided to take the next day off from work and drive out to Montauk to have a firsthand look for himself. Please also note that several years ago LIBBA “adopted” Shagwong County Park which also brought the responsibility of maintaining the air compressors. The next day Chuck and Frank met up at the park and went to the task of trying to repair the units. They found one of the compressor motors was burnt up and the other needed parts and wiring replaced. After working on this for several hours in the hot August sun they got one of the compressors up and running and by mid afternoon the motor out of the other one. Not wanting to stress out the one working compressor they had 3 of the 6 air stations shut down. The following week another trip was made to Montauk to install the new motor. This got the rest of the air stations back up and assured all that use this beach that they could air back up for the rest of the season. While Frank and Chuck are on the LIBBA Board and work hard at keeping the organization running they are just regular LIBBA volunteers. They understand that you can’t always depend on the State and County to react quickly to remedy a problem and it’s another reason why LIBBA adopted Shagwong County Park so many years ago. With the current state that the County and State Parks are in financially and the bureaucratic snags that often occur when something gets broken, if LIBBA members had not stepped forward the problem with the compressors could have lasted for a very long time instead of just the day and a half. So if you see either Frank, LIBBA #382 or Chuck, LIBBA #696 please be sure to say thanks for the two days they spent servicing the compressors (ON THERE OWN TIME!!!) for all who drive the beach. The funny part is that large portions of the people who camp, fish or just day trip at Shagwong are not even LIBBA members but they fully expect that the air compressors should be working when they want to head for home. Another example of LIBBA and its volunteers coming through happened last year with the compressors at Democrat Point. After Super Storm Sandy struck in October 2012 there was lots of work done by the State to get the Robert Moses Park back into shape for 2013. There was tons of heavy equipment moving sand. During the cleanup the piping that goes from the compressors to the air stations got dug up thus making the air stations unusable. Some LIBBA members came together in the spring and dug up the damaged pipe and replaced it. This was completed before the beach was reopened in May. These same LIBBA members perform regular maintenance to the Demo compressors over the course of the season to insure they are always in working order. I would hate to think what would happen if the state or county parks were the only ones responsible to perform the maintenance and repairs to these vital pieces of equipment. Sure people could install or carry on board air systems but these are often expensive. Having access to an air compressor just off the beach is more than a convenience for most of us. The folks who manage our Parks appreciate that LIBBA takes on this responsibility and know that we will probably get it resolved quicker than they could. Being able to react to these kinds of problems quickly and resolve them is helpful in LIBBA maintaining a good relationship with these park managers. If you’re reading this you are most likely a LIBBA member. If you possess the skills/talent to help LIBBA maintain this equipment and can volunteer your time when it’s necessary please call the LIBBA hotline or drop an e-mail to someone on the LIBBA board and let us know that you would like to help. I for one don’t have the mechanical skills to fix a compressor but I do volunteer my time in other ways such as beach clean ups, grass plantings, installation of the string fencing for the nesting birds. But even if you cannot contribute time to these activities just being a due’s paying member is as important to keeping the organization strong. The larger our organization the stronger voice we have with the people who have the greatest impact to our beach access. If you’re a member please remain one. I usually renew my dues every year by visiting the LIBBA booth at some of the Sportsman shows that occur every winter or at the LIBBA Annual meeting which is being held on March 9th, at the Hibernian Hall in Babylon on Sunday March 9th starting at 1:30pm. But it’s just as easy to renew by visiting the LIBBA web site https://libba.wildapricot.org/ and logging on with your e-mail address and password and then clicking on MEMBER RENEWAL or to become a new member just click on the MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION after accessing the web page. Of course there’s the always reliable U.S (snail) Mail and you can send your check or money order payable to: LIBBA and mail to: LIBBA PO BOX 816, Babylon, NY 11702 Leif Gobel #865 The Real Housewives of LIBBABy: MacGyver’s Wife Every weekend we prepare our RV’s or campers for a fun and relaxing weekend on the beach. You know ladies exactly what that entails. Cleaning the rv or camper, making sure there is plenty of food and drinks, clean towels, just everything you need to enjoy all the comforts of home whilst on the beach and lucky us we get to do this every week from April through October. While I love the beach and cherish all the wonderful family time and fond memories that we have made together on the beaches of Long Island, it also presents challenges, like trying to stay on the beach with hubby while your teenager has other plans for their weekend which usually only includes the parental units because they need a chauffeur. When my husband first presented the idea to me to purchase an RV, I rolled my eyes, and thought to myself “just humor him, this too will pass” But it didn’t! Then I thought OK, I don’t want that “THING” in my driveway and so I wittingly say…”if your mom lets you keep it in her driveway, well then sure buy one” not thinking for a minute that my mother in law would allow that THING in her driveway. But just as my luck would have it, she was very accommodating to her son. The irony of this all is that while I was totally against the whole RV THING, I do cherish whatever time I can spend on the beach even if it is a challenge, once I am there, for the time that I am there, I love cooking for my family and friends, walking the beach searching for that rare piece of red sea glass, watching the sunset while thinking that it just doesn’t get any better than this! BTW our RV has seen little time over at my mother-in-laws. Now wait a minute….. “all the comforts of home whilst on the beach” ……. I have always dreamt of owning a home on the beach so I guess my dream has come true and I have absolutely nothing to complain about. LOL so I am giving a shout out to all the REAL Housewives of LIBBA to contribute to future newsletters whether it is a yummy summer recipe or a LIBBA Husbandism to share or anything in-between. I look forward to hearing from you…. until next time. We added several “sticky” forum topics (sticky = remains on top), with topics like Beach Access topics for our primary beach access locations. I for one would love to learn about beach access issues “From Our Members” to help with my better understanding of access states. As an example, Hither hills or Demo or any of our Long Island Beach access points may be closed and for what reason. Events – We now post our known events on the site. Whether a Fishing Expo, a monthly LIBBA meeting or our annual LIBBA meeting, you not only can be made aware of what is in plan but you may also choose to register to attend and if you choose, can have your registered name listed so other are aware of your intent to participate in the event and vice versa. We have a business sponsor page with links back to their web pages for your convenience. We will be providing a brief demonstration of the new site at our annual meeting. Like we did at last year’s annual event, we will try to make the demonstration fun by taking breaks in-between topics to give out prizes for the member who provides the correct answer. The key to our new member web site is that we need to have your current email address attached to your membership profile. With it, the system will create a unique temporary password that you can use to log in and then change after the first time you log in to anything you can easily remember. Al Scardino Web Site Master World Wide Web (www) PASSWORD Guidance RecommendationsEmail Address and/or Unique IDs and Passwords are the key to accessing your online presence and accounts. Establishing a Non-Promiscuous password is ESSENTIAL.. To create a nontrivial password, you should use a series of upper/lower characters and numbers. If you want to make it even stronger, insert a special character to make your password even more bulletproof. Using just a combination of upper and lower characters is NOT enough these days. As a SUGGESTION, you can insert a number in between a 2 or more syllable word. As a fictitious example, I have an Indianapolis 500 model corvette. A fine example using this affinity could be cor500vette or indian500apolis or indianapolis500corvette or corvette500indianapolis. Now if I add 1 or 2 capital characters to any of these characters, it makes it less trivial. If I also include for example, a special character $ character in place of the s, or a capital let O in place of the zeros in 500, it makes it even less trivial. Protecting yourself on-line is imperative so adapting to this sort of password behavior will make the password easy for you to remember and almost impossible to hack. Need more tips, ask others and/or the webmaster who should be happy to provide an opinion. Have another tip, start a blog or a “discussion forum topic” on the new web site to bring the subject to light.
